Resolute Time

“Dr Wu, you’re needed in COM.  Team Jenner is broadcasting from the future.”

“I’m on my way, Bobby.  Make sure they’re recording everything. Turn on every device.  Got it?”

“Got it, Doc.”

“Do it.”

Submitted for your approval.  Dr. David Wu is the founder and Director of Future Exploration and Time Engineering, or FETE.  Three teams were sent into three different futures with the goal of tapping into local and planet-wide broadcasts.  What Dr. Wu doesn’t know is that FETE is destroying the possible future of earth and its 7.2 billion inhabitants. The FETE teams are traveling in another dimension of time, space, and the mind.  Next stop, the Outer Twilight Zone Limits.

“Well, Bobby?  Where is she?”

“Sorry, David.  Dr. Jenner transmitted her intention to broadcast and then, nothing.  I’ve got three dishes on her and everything that can be boosted, has been boosted, Doc.  Now Jenner was working on a way to locate personnel in time and space.  Everyone has a version of  Jenner’s tracker on them. Sasha’s trying to get the program to at least acknowledge them…”

“And?  What Bobby?”

“They’re gone.  We’re getting nothing.  Even Manny G’s vitals monitoring has stopped working or they’re not there.  They’re not dead–just gone. Or….”

“Or they no longer have their trackers.  Or that timeline is gone, Bobby.”

“How is that possible, David?  I mean, that’s just myth about affecting the timeline.  If it were true, then we’re under the thumb of destiny, fate.  Even Einstein said “there is neither evolution nor destiny; only being”.”

“You’ve taken that out of context, Dr. MacDougall.  We’ll debate that another time.  If we have time.  Contact the other teams.  Get them back here before something happens to them.”

“There’s a delay, Doc….”

Ignore the delay.  Get them back.”

Two hours later

“David? Meiying Baylor and her team are back.  We’re still waiting on Maynerd and his team.”

“You should be able to pluck them out of the air, Bobby.”

“Yeah, well maybe they have their air brakes on because they’re not responding.  They’re there. We’ve got the trackers and their vitals match, but somehow they’re preventing me from bringing them back.  Listen, David, they would have to exercise extreme concentration–all of them together, to keep me from grabbing them.”

“They don’t want to return.  Why?”

“Meiying has a theory.  Wait, she’s sleeping–they’re all sleeping in the Q, David….”

“What’s your theory, Dr. Baylor?  Why can’t we get the rest of our people back?  Uh…want a coffee?”

“Hell, no.  That’s like…brain bleach.  Tea would be nice.  Oh, stop snorting, David.  Forget it.  Just listen to what I have to say and don’t snort, snicker or interrupt.”

“Jenner and her team are gone.  They do not exist nor does that timeline they were in exist.  Because, either something happened and they disrupted the timeline or, and this is a big, “or;” by them leaving their present–the future timeline’s past–they prevented that timeline from being, existing. Either all or some or one member was a linchpin for that future.”

“And Maynerd’s team?”

“They are either trying to save their asses or ours.  I think they found themselves in a possible paradox  and they’re not making a move until they can figure out whether they should stay or they should go.”

“We eliminated paradox early on.  We weren’t anywhere near paradox in case a few of you might be correct about the noninterference regulation of the Federation.”

“Roddenberry wrote that into the scripts based on the beliefs of physicists back then.  Now, I know, David, that you think Einstein was a flash in the pan and that someone who couldn’t tie his own shoes should not dictate scientific theory for decades.  Yet, quixotically, you embrace Einstein’s theories.”

“It’s stupid.  He claimed he didn’t believe in destiny but there it is still spitting in our collective face. That’s all it is, Meiying.  It’s just destiny or fate which means we have no say in our future and free will is just a sham.”

“Stop this debate with the very dead Einstein that you continually fall back on when you have doubts about something, David.”

“Meiying, we can’t leave the two teams there to fend for themselves because you have a smattering of theories about the situation and not surprisingly, about me.”

“Fine, David.  Do what you think you need to do, or Einstein might do.  I better not wake up  and find myself balancing on the edge of the galactic core with 7.2 billion others because we have no future to go to….”

“Dr. Baylor.  Meiying.  You have to get up.  Come on.”

“Now what, Bobby?  Do David  and Einstein have some brilliant scheme to save the two teams?”

“Uh…he already tried that. Come take a look…look out the door.  Don’t go outside yet until we can figure out a few things.”

“Damn, damn!  What did he do?  What did he do?  What are we going to do now, Bobby?  When the hell are we?”

“Ah, we’re not sure.  David thinks we’re in the past…”

“What, Earth’s past?  Do you see anything that looks like it’s Earth to you, Bobby? It looks like some artist’s rendering of a fantasy world…”

“It’s Earth, Meiying.  We’re in the White Desert of Egypt.”

“Really, David?   Since when does Earth have two moons?  I’m on pins and needles wondering how may suns there are….”

Dr. David Wu and his colleagues won’t be going anywhere anytime soon.  What looks like a fantasy interpretation to most of us, is their new reality.  And somewhere between heaven, the sky, the earth, lies the Outer Twilight Zone Limits.  CLICK HERE to  continue their adventure.

When I was a kid I wanted to be an "atomic" scientist. Not anything my mother expected of me. Well, I became a scientist, just not an atomic one.

  1. These are just super fun. I like the all-dialogue format. Interesting time travel theory, too.

Thank you. so much Stephanie. There are so many different theories about dimensions and time travel, string theory, etc., I just make up my own. I like doing dialogue, then the characters’ personalities come out. Thanks again. Lucy .

  2. This is great! Fascinating idea, great execution (I didn’t even notice it was all dialogue at first because it reads so smoothly) and I love that you included all the prompts in here!

    • Lucy says:

Well, thank you very much. I appreciate your comment. I like writing dialogue and I started out with dialogue and before I knew it I had told the whole story in dialogue. Thanks again. Lucy

Seriously, tell me what you think
