The Queen, Royal Ascot, and lots of crazy hats

I get that warm, fuzzy feeling when the Queen opens Royal Ascot Racecourse.  Don’t you? Of  course you do.  And, why are we overwhelmed with nostalgia?  The Brits have been racing one thing or another at Ascot since 1711.  I don’t recall that year but I can say that the British love their traditions.  One of their strange traditions is the wearing of hats to the races–pretty hats, bizarre hats, fun hats.  The tradition of wearing hats started long ago when men and women wore hats when they went out in public, particularly in the presence of  Royalty-definitely in the presence of the Queen.  Royal Ascot Racecourse became a showcase for fashion, which of course, included women’s hats.  Each year the Queen  opens the racecourse for the season. ( I’m not sure how she does it–maybe she has the keys and opens the doors).   It’s now five days of fashion, and silliness.  Each of those five days has a particular theme involving clothes and hats. Lady’s day is a day for showing off.  And the Queen had a horse racing.

The Queen is famous for many things, one of which is her hats and outfits–the whole ensemble. Everything she wears looks alike to me, just in different colors.  Her hats are fundamentally boring and it’s not because she’s aged.  The Queen is a conservative dresser.  All the women who marry into the family, suddenly find themselves wearing hats.  She probably has a Minister of Hats.

The photos of the hats at Ascot 2014 are on the sidebar, large tiles mosaic, last item.  Click on any photo and start the slide show.  Enjoy.

When I was a kid I wanted to be an "atomic" scientist. Not anything my mother expected of me. Well, I became a scientist, just not an atomic one.

Hats are just dandy. Wish we wore them more in the U.S.

I just adore the Queen, and love seeing her arrayed in her many hats. Ascot – my favorite scene from My Fair Lady takes place at the races. Recall it? Oh so proper! and fun!

Rex Harrison and Audrey Hepburn. She looked great. I have so many photos of the Queen, young and not young. Couldn’t put them all on the blog. However, I just discovered that I can put a gallery of photos on a page and I put it on as a menu item. That’s how I set up the Ascot photos. I do have the slide shows on the sidebar. I will put up more crazy hats from this year’s Ascot.. Lucy

Seriously, tell me what you think
