Distant Thunder

I’m not climbing five floors.”
“You take it.  I’ll take the stairs.”

Dodi shot up the stairs while Larry cursed the antiquated lift’s sluggish climb.  She was waiting for him when he reached the 5th floor. The lift’s door wouldn’t open. Dodi was fiddling with the jammed door latch when they heard the screech of the lift’s brakes. The lift slipped past Dodi and she screamed as Larry fell…

Dodi awoke to the thundering of Aerosmith from her cell phone.  She picked up.  It was Larry’s Commanding Officer.  Larry’s parachute never opened.  Dodi screamed.

Larry awoke startled.   “Dodi, what’s wrong?”

When I was a kid I wanted to be an "atomic" scientist. Not anything my mother expected of me. Well, I became a scientist, just not an atomic one.

  1. Nan Falkner says:

Good story and she must have premonitions – hope she listens and especially Larry! Good job! Nan

  2. Dear Lucy,

There’s nothing worse than a dream within a dream. You nailed that helpless feeling.

Welcome to Friday fictioneers. I look forward to reading more from you.

  3. Sounds like she has some serious anxiety issues 😉
    Well told

  4. JudahFirst says:

Dreams within dreams … everyone’s nightmare, eh? Nicely done!

  5. subroto says:

Layered nightmares – nicely done. Glad it ended well.

  6. So was Larry a ghost or was this another dream, this time a premonition? If that latter, I think Larry’s going to have a hard time getting out of jumping because of her dream! 🙂 Good job.

  7. Double double bluff. Cleverrrr.

  8. Wow! That was a lot of action in a short story. If she keeps that up her hair might turn prematurely gray. Good story and well done.

Seriously, tell me what you think
